Historic orchard

Before becoming the center of Silicon Valley technology, Sunnyvale was known for extensive cherry and apricot orchards that defined the region's agricultural economy through much of the 20th century.

Sunnyvale's valley soil, temperate climate, and proximity to San Francisco Bay created ideal conditions for fruit growing. From the early 1900s through the 1960s, cherry and apricot orchards covered much of what is now Sunnyvale and surrounding areas. The city's name itself comes from the sunny valley and abundant flowering fruit trees that gave the region its character. Harvest season brought work to thousands of seasonal laborers, and packing houses processed millions of pounds of fruit for shipment to markets throughout California and beyond.

The transition from orchards to offices began after World War II and accelerated through the 1960s and 1970s. Developers purchased orchard land as urban expansion pushed southward from San Jose. By the 1980s, orchards were nearly gone, replaced by office parks, shopping centers, and residential neighborhoods. A few heritage fruit trees remain scattered throughout the city, remnants of what once defined the region. The Sunnyvale Heritage Park preserves the memory of this agricultural past, with interpretive markers and demonstrations of traditional orcharding practices.

The shift from agriculture to technology reflects broader changes in California's economy and in Sunnyvale itself. Families with roots in the agricultural era have watched their city transform completely within a lifetime. That continuity and change—keeping the household stable across major economic shifts—is central to life insurance planning. A term policy reflects the promise of continuity to the next generation.
